Origin Story: The Steppe Rings

Lindsay Olson

Back in late 2020, I pulled myself out of a depression that had latched onto me long before the pandemic hit. As a self employed artist, I couldn’t get myself to feel inspiration anymore, to be excited about coming into work every day, and this business that I’d built and worked toward for so many years was slipping away from me. Every day I thought about quitting. It permeated my personal life too. My relationships suffered, and self hatred gripped and clung like cobwebs in my brain. I had nothing left, and it was time to get help.

After months of therapy and starting medication, I began to feel glimmers of myself reemerging. I stepped into my studio one day, pulled out my stone collection, and started fitting shapes and colors together. This is my favorite way to design - losing myself in the forms until new pieces start to buzz at my fingertips. I carved away at the wax until the pieces I saw in my head began to peek through. A new collection of rings burst out of me - all created from materials I had already; these exuberant rings were there within me the whole time.

I choose to share this deeply personal experience because stepping out of depression is the the best thing I’ve ever done for myself, but it also saved this business, my relationship, my friendships, and my ability to show up as a member of my community. And in the three years since treating my depression, I have grown to love the art of making jewelry again.

That initial grouping of three Steppe Rings eventually grew to five, and each one has now found a home. With this latest release, we ‘re up to 39 one of a kind styles.

These rings represent so much to me: the revival of my art, the love I have for myself, a lightness I was able to achieve because I was able to prioritize my mental health and heal my brain. They are exuberant and colorful.

With Adeline, I have always sought to connect with my community. I firmly believe that access to mental health resources is a fundamental human right. In conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month, 15% of proceeds from this series of designs will be donated directly to La Clinica de la Raza, a local organization with several locations throughout the Bay Area, one of which happens to be right down the street from my studio.

And lastly, if you are still reading this lengthy post and you are struggling with your mental health, please feel free to reach out. I am happy to listen or answer any questions about my own experience with depression, therapy, or medication as honestly as I can.

the skully family

Lindsay Olson

Meet the Skully Family. They’re visiting us from beyond the grave until midnight on October 31st.

A skull necklace was one of the first pieces of jewelry I ever designed. The collection has taken on a more abstract aesthetic since then. But as a nod to the everlasting power of the undead, and to celebrate my favorite spooky season, we resurrect these designs once a year for a limited release. Take one home with you now, before we bury them again.

JACK

Jack is the OG, the sire of every Skully hereafter. He’s your quintessential spookster: iconic, everlasting, undead, eternal.

BONEHEAD

Bonehead is a big, bad signet ring. Originally crafted as a custom piece for Lindsay’s brother, Bonehead is now available, for a limited time, to all who have asked, begged, pleaded to wear him. A hefty, silver signet topped with a solid gold skull and deep blue sapphire eyes.

FREDDY

Freddy is Bonehead’s glam and delicate kid sister. We love this one as a pinky ring, the diamond eye winking at you as it catching the golden Autumn sunlight.

SHIRLEY

Shirley is the most refined member of the skull family. She’ll invite you over for cocktails, soothe you with a glass of sparkling wine and a cozy chair by a roaring fire… and then tell you the spookiest story you’ve ever heard, her eye twinkling with glee as the goosebumps prickle your spine.

JEKYLL AND HYDE

Technically one member of the Skully family, Jekyll and Hyde combines dueling forces in an eternal battle between good and evil.

NORMAN

Norman is the oddball of the family. A loner, though polite and hospitable if called upon. Don’t let his quiet nature deceive you - he’s always watching.

THE GRADY TWINS

Who doesn’t love a set of creepy twins? The Grady twins invite you to come play with them… forever.

DAMIEN

The baby of the family. Damien is bright, shiny, and creepy as hell.

Orders from our limited release are made to order and will ship by 11.15

Happy Halloween!

Spring Color

Lindsay Olson

If you know me, you might know I am happiest waking up with the fog-soaked dawn on a misty gray morning, clad in layers of wool, my fingers wrapped around a warm cup of coffee. But alas, seasons are a thing, even as subtle as they tend to be here in the city by the Bay. The silver lining (pardon the intentional jewelry pun) is this explosion of color we receive in the form of wildflowers, clear skies, and green gardens. Because although I love a rainy day indoors, I also adore a colorful display for the eyeballs.

From the unexpected (think lemony citrine, mossy tourmaline, and blush pink sapphire), to the classic (picture a primary combo of red, yellow, and blue), I will simply never tire of finding new ways to celebrate the natural beauty of these gems.

Spring Vintage Edit

Lindsay Olson

When I decided to add a collection of curated vintage offerings to my web shop, it was due to a serendipitous discovery at an estate sale. I stumbled on a trove of neglected and cast off pieces: some broken, with chipped or missing stones, some simply in need of a little polish. “I’m a jeweler, I could save these,” I said to myself. And so I took the plunge into the vintage and antique world of hunting, collecting, re-finishing, and restoring.

If you’re looking for the most sustainable option in fine jewelry, go with vintage. We know that buying pre-owned is the most eco friendly choice when it comes to clothing, and while fine jewelry isn’t exactly taking up space in a landfill, there are other factors to consider that make vintage jewelry greener: nothing is mined fresh from the Earth, and there are no new processes of production. Some of these stones are so old that they were cut using only natural light, having been crafted before the invention of electricity!

As a contemporary artist, I’m always drawn to the history of the craft - many ancient techniques and design principles are still utilized today. I strive to create future heirlooms with my own collection of timeless designs that will one day be passed down, shared, perhaps even reworked or restored. In that vein, my hope is to bring new futures to these treasures: each with an existing history, a mystery of a past life searching for a new home. It’s up to us to write their next chapter. Which one calls to you?

Steppe RIngs

The newest crop of Steppes

I’m so excited to release a new collection of one of a kind Steppe Rings. When this grouping started coming together, I was reflecting on what this design has meant to me. I’ve made lovely connections with each customer the first Steppes went home with. Learning what drew them to the particular design they chose has been another level of enjoyment, getting to see where these pieces find homes.

One customer coined the term “Steppe Sisters,” feeling a kind of bond with the others who choose to commemorate something personal with these rings. Read below to hear about what each of them had to say about their ring and what it means to them.

No. 3

“Mine has been so special and such a comfort to me… I love that they have a story with you in their creation. I hold that close too.”

No. 4

My engagement ring and wedding band were of course incredibly special to me, but we've seen our lives grow and change through so much over the years, including a miscarriage and long unfulfilled infertility journey. My plan was to keep the stones of my original ring, however, I left Lindsay studio with a completely different ring that ultimately seemed to capture a future of joy, purpose and adventure.

No. 1

"So deeply in love with my ring! And all of the stories that come with it - feel so connected."

No. 5

“I saw this ring at a trunk show and couldn’t get it out of my mind! I loved the geometric modern setting and the unique profile. This has become my new favorite ring. It feels both casual and luxe.”

With the latest drop, I will be donating 15% of proceeds to La Clinica de la Raza, a local organization serving to provide wider access to health care in the Bay Area.
